During an appearance on CNN tonight With Chris Cuomo’s temporary replacement Michael Smerconish on Tuesday, Olympic television veteran and sports commentator Bob Costas called on the International Olympic Committee for its “affinity for authoritarian nations” and its rebuffs against the United States. He also surprised viewers by calling “the likes of Colin Kaepernick and LeBron James” who enrich themselves with their shoes made in China and do not denounce the wickedness of the regime.

Speaking originally about President Biden’s decision to implement a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics, Costas took a detour and noted: Authoritarian nations?

He then explained that the IOC had snubbed the United States for years because they were looked down upon by our media:

There will be the Olympics – Summer Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles. It has been since 2002, when the Winter Games were in Salt Lake, that there had been the Olympics on American soil, and yet American television is the biggest source of income for the IOC.

Many IOC delegates remain upset in the United States because a free press blew up coverage of the Salt Lake auction scandal. Mitt Romney had to come in and clear things up. It was all in the air. Everything may have collapsed.

“They have long memories of this stuff, and the IOC and many of these delegates act in an authoritarian manner. And in that sense, you can see where the affinity for authoritarian nations comes into play, ”he admonished.

And it was Smerconish who put Costas on track to call up the NBA for being in bed with Communist China. “I have to believe that there are some guys who are holding their breath watching this because if that is reason enough for it to be a diplomatic boycott then what does it say to About the NBA doing business in China, ”he asked.

“The NBA is up to their necks in China,” Costas said, noting how China is beating them. He recalled that China had withdrawn broadcasts of the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics games because team members were outspoken against China. Including NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom:

COSTAS: Most recently Enes Kanter who grew up in Turkey, so he knows what bossy –

SMERCONISH: Celtic?

COSTAS: Yeah, the Celtics. He’s a Turk, he spoke out against China. Same thing. Celtic games [snaps fingers] like that, gone.

“I guarantee you that the thread of this conversation has disappeared in China at this time,” he added.

Soon after, Costas targeted “people like Colin Kaepernick and LeBron James” who had their Nike shoes made in Chinese sweatshops. “And these outspoken people and in many cases I think millions of Americans would agree with their positions on domestic issues, but they are blatantly silent when it comes to China,” he said. -he declares.

Adding: “And whatever the problems are here, and they are serious problems, in terms of dimension, they pale next to what’s going on in China.”

BOB COSTAS: One of the big questions now that you can’t sidestep is, what is it with the IOC and their affinity for authoritarian nations?

There will be the Olympics – Summer Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles. It has been since 2002, when the Winter Games were in Salt Lake, that there had been the Olympics on American soil, and yet American television is the biggest source of income for the IOC.

Many IOC delegates remain upset in the United States because a free press blew up coverage of the Salt Lake auction scandal. Mitt Romney had to come in and clear things up. It was all in the air. Everything may have collapsed. They have long memories of this stuff, and the IOC and many of these delegates act in an authoritarian manner. And in that sense, you can see where the affinity for authoritarian nations comes into play.

MICHAEL SMERCONISH: I have another acronym for you. It’s not the IOC …

COSTAS: Yeah?

SMERCONISH: – it’s the NBA. I have to believe that there are some guys who hold their breath watching this because if that is reason enough for it to be a diplomatic boycott then what does that say about the does the NBA do business in China?

COSTAS: The NBA is up to its neck in China. China is a huge sports market. Basketball is particularly popular there. But they will not tolerate the slightest criticism. They reject it outright, and when they can, some of them may just be rattling like saying today that the United States will pay the price for its misdeeds. But as far as they can, they demand a price.

I’m repeating myself here because I’ve told you and others on CNN before, but a few years ago when Daryl Morey, then general manager of the Houston Rockets –

SMERCONISH: Of course.

COSTAS: – tweeted: ‘support Hong Kong’, rocket games have suddenly been put on hold for an extended period in China. And the Rockets are one of the most popular teams there because Yao Ming was the first Chinese big star in the NBA.

Most recently, Enes Kanter who grew up in Turkey, so he knows which bossy –

SMERCONISH: Celtic?

COSTAS: Yeah, the Celtics. He’s a Turk, he spoke out against China. Same thing. Celtic games [snaps fingers] like that, gone. I guarantee that the thread of this conversation has disappeared in China at this time.

COSTAS: By the way, a lot of Nike products—

SMERCONISH: Of course.

COSTAS: – which benefit Colin Kaepernick and LeBron James –

SMERCONISH: Without a doubt.

COSTAS: – made in China.

SMERCONISH: Yes.

COSTAS: And those outspoken people and in many cases I think millions of Americans would agree with their positions on domestic issues, but they’re obviously dumb when it comes to China. And whatever the issues here, and they’re serious issues, in terms of dimension, they pale next to what’s going on in China.
