Generational GZC, Kotlin 1.5.30, Jakarta EE 10 Release Plan, SpringOne Conference

It was relatively quiet in this week’s Java roundup for August 23, 2021. Featured news includes JEP 413 having been promoted to Offered to Target status, Jakarta EE 10 release plan, work on the Generational ZGC, Kotlin 1.5.30, MicroProfile Rest Client 3.0 -RC1, Hibernate ORM 5.3.22.Final and the SpringOne conference.

OpenJDK

JEP 413, Code snippets in the Java API documentation, has been promoted of Candidate To Proposed to target status for JDK 18. This JEP introduces the @snippet tag for Oracle Standard doclet, the well-known Java API documentation utility that produces output in HTML format by default. The intention is to simplify the inclusion of source code examples in the API documentation.

JDK 18

Build 12 of JDK 18 early access versions was made available last week with updates of Build 11 which include fixes for various problems. More details can be found in the release notes.

For both JDK 17 and JDK 18, developers are encouraged to report bugs through the Java Bug Database.

Jakarta EE 10

Ivar grimstad, Advocate for Jakarta EE Developers at the Eclipse Foundation, a announcement that the Jakarta EA Working Group approved the Jakarta EE 10 exit plan. Less than a year after the Jakarta EE 9.1 released, the first quarter of 2022 has been targeted as the official release date. As noted in the roadmap below, October 15, 2021 has been set as the launch date for version reviews for the Characteristics being updated.

Generational ZGC

Oracle Z Garbage Collector (ZGC), provided in JDK 11, is a scalable, low latency garbage collector with the following goals:

  • GC pause time not exceeding 10ms.
  • Ability to manage heaps ranging in size from a few hundred megabytes to several terabytes.
  • Performance overload acceptable for many workloads.

So far, ZGC has not supported generational collecting (the ability to separately collect short duration and long duration items).

Work is underway by Oracle to support this feature – and three months after the creation of a branch on the GitHub ZGC deposit, an important number of commits have been added to zgc_generational branch last week, paving the way for full support for the generational hypothesis in ZGC in an upcoming release of Java.

MicroProfile

On the road to MicroProfile 5.0, Rest Client 3.0-RC1 was released with a Jakarta EE 9 dependency update. Scheduled for release in Q4 2021, developers can expect updates to all eight in-house APIs: Config, Metrics, Health, Fault Tolerance, JWT Propagation , Rest Client, Open Tracing and Open API.

Hibernate

ORM hibernation 5.3.22.Final, a maintenance version on the old version 5.3, the train was made available with support for JDK 17 and Java Gradle toolchains. There have also been upgrades ByteBuddy and Javassist to support JDK 17 and JDK 18 early access versions.

Kotlin

These are: sealed when declarations which provide a warning if a when the statement is not exhaustive; new rules to use and report opt-in requirement annotations on different targets; instantiation of annotation classes which allows to call annotation class constructors to obtain a resulting instance; and improvements to the Duration and Regex Apis.
