GM can’t find chips to activate Super Cruise in upcoming Cadillac Escalade

Cadillac has dropped a fairly important feature of the 2022 Cadillac Escalade. Engine1 and Roadshow, the model will not be equipped with Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance technology. A spokesperson for the brand confirmed to the publications that the Super Cruise will be “temporarily unavailable at the start of regular production,” although they have expressed the possibility that it will be available for vehicles manufactured later. The spokesperson also revealed that the reason for the change is none other than the global shortage of chips born from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cadillac’s entire statement reads as follows:

“Super Cruise is an important feature of the Cadillac Escalade program. Although it is temporarily unavailable at the start of regular production due to the semiconductor shortage across the industry, we are confident in our team’s ability to find creative solutions to mitigate the supply chain. situation and resume offering the functionality to our customers as soon as possible. “

The company also said Roadshow that it was only able to build “a few” CT4 and CT5 sedans scheduled for release this year with the possibility of using Super Cruise. It has had to postpone the full launch of its driver assistance system in sedans until model year 2022, which will begin marketing next year.

The global semiconductor shortage has had a dramatic effect on the tech and automotive industries. GM, the maker of Cadillac, had to to suspend production in all but four of its plants in North America due to supply constraints. Nissan, Ford, BMW and Honda also had to reduce vehicle production. In Ford’s case, this led to the delay in shipments of the Mach-E electric vehicle.

GM has big plans for Super Cruise and before announcement its plans to bring the technology to 22 vehicles by 2023. It is not clear whether these delays and adjustments caused by the chip shortage would affect the timeline it has set for itself.
