McCarthy to meet with Trump before considering GOP members for commission 1/6

Minority Parliamentary Leader Kevin McCarthy will meet with former President Donald Trump before determining which GOP members to place on the committee investigating the January 6 insurgency.

“Kevin McCarthy will meet me this afternoon at Trump National in Bedminster, NJ. Lots to discuss! ” Asset ad in a statement today.

McCarthy may appoint five members to the committee after consultation with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). He had previously threat to strip Republicans of their committee duties if they accept an offer from Pelosi to serve on the committee.

Last month Pelosi confirmed that she has the power to veto any of McCarthy’s choices, although she has not confirmed whether she would allow any Republican who voted not to certify that President Joe Biden’s constituency would win on the panel.

Senate Republicans last month blocked legislation that would have created a bipartisan committee to investigate the attack and conducted the investigation outside the halls of Congress.

The Senate voted 54-35 to move the measure forward, but it did not get the 60 votes needed to overcome a GOP obstruction, which would have blocked debate on the bill. The House had previously approved the commission; 35 Republicans voted in favor.
