From the article: Intel has removed support for SGX (Software Protection Extension) in 12th Gen Intel Core 11000 and 12000 processors, rendering modern PCs unable to play Blu-ray discs at 4K resolution.

This technical problem stems from the fact that Blu-ray discs require digital rights management (DRM), which needs SGX to be present in order to function.

This is a feature introduced by Intel in the Skylake generation in 2016, allowing PCs to play protected Blu-ray discs for the first time.

As Intel’s current datasheets for the 11th and 12th generations of its Core desktop processors show, the SGX is listed as a deprecated technology, so it’s no longer available.
