American athletes heading to the Winter Olympics next month in Beijing have reportedly been asked to leave your personal phone behind amid security concerns.
Team USA encouraged Americans competing in games to take cellphones instead to prevent potential surveillance, according to a Friday report from The Wall Street Journal.
Team USA and the International Olympic Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The report comes after the Biden administration confirmed in December thatin Beijing, organizing a diplomatic boycott against human rights violations in China.
“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, given the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights violations. of man,” said the press secretary. Jen Psaki said during a press briefing in December. “Team USA athletes have our full support.”
The Winter Olympics will begin on February 4 and will include seven new sports such as monobob, a women-only bobsleigh competition.
