Left Magazine Atlantic posted an interview with the massively popular Christian satire site The Babylon Bee on Thursday, which turned out to be hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Religious writer Emma Green tried to blame Bee editor Kyle Mann for poking fun at leftists (although she apparently had no problem with the satire site’s self-deprecating jokes about the Evangelical Church.)
Green was so irritated by the jokes aimed at the left that Mann was forced to explain what the obvious jokes about Democrats bothered by Trump meant.
The article titled “Christians who don’t care about enlightenment to earn a living ” started out friendly enough with typical informational questions.
But after Mann admitted their writers had to be shrewd when provoking “left-wing Twitter,” the conversation got sharper.
Green tried to taunt him for the bee’s scathing joke about Democrats being so mad by Donald Trump, that they fell in mourning when his orders took out a terrorist:
GREEN: You wrote an article in January 2020 that was shared about 3 million times claiming Democrats called for the US flag to be hoisted at half mast when Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US strike. What makes that funny? I know this is the worst question to ask someone who writes jokes.
MANN: It’s funny because General Soleimani died and then they asked for the flags to be lowered. To find?
GREEN: But that’s what I’m saying. Besides repeating the joke, what makes it funny?
MANN: Do you want me to explain the joke to you? Because the joke is that General Soleimani is dead and the Democrats were sad. If you don’t know why it’s funny then you are not the joke audience. Funny thing is, he got checked out because he was so believable that Democrats would do it. It is a real honor.
And Mann was right, as you can see from our coverage of how the left-wing media and the Democrats reacted to Soleimani’s death.
Subsequently, Green still did not understand. “Sounds like it’s a Supreme Court and pornography case: you know it when you see it.” Either you laugh or you don’t laugh, and if you’re in the not category, we can’t help you, ”she conceded.
Soon after, Green berated Mann for a joke she didn’t like, again. This time it was about how racist leftists can be [click expand]:
GREEN: I’m talking about one of the drawings in your new book, one at the start of Chapter 2, which deals with race. It has three little sticks: a peach colored one that says “bad”; one next to it which is gray which says “better”; and one on the right which says “better”. This one is black.
Why do you think this is funny?
MANN: Well, it’s because being a fish isn’t good. Being gray is better. And being black is better.
GREEN Okay, but you’re not just talking about stick figures. You are making a joke about the way progressives think about the hierarchy of races.
MANN: I’m not going to sit here and deconstruct and explain every joke to you. We take this ridiculous position to make fun of something – to make fun of the idea that your skin color matters in setting up an oppressed versus oppressor class hierarchy. If you really don’t get the joke, I can’t help you.
The obtuse interviewer also punched Bee’s editor over the head about his “ethical responsibility “ tell factual jokes. Yes really. Mann also had a good answer to this, even pointing out the the famous SNL Sarah Palin sketch:
GREEN: But I want to ask a question about fact-checking. I don’t think the reason Snopes checked was because it was so plausible. I think it’s because it’s been shared millions of times. What if people believed it was real? Do you worry about this no matter how many times you make it clear that you are a satirical post?
MANN: Not really. Comedy has been taken for granted for years. We write for Facebook and Twitter. What makes comedy work is that when someone scrolls through their newsfeed and reads a Babylon Bee title, they are not ready to laugh. They are ready to consume a press article, editorial or editorial. Then they do a double take and say, “Wait a minute …”
GREEN: Does that impose an ethical responsibility on you?
MANN: No more than any other comedian whose joke merges with reality. Made SNL bear the blame because people still think Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house?
After repeatedly trying and failing to shame the bee, Green ended the interview by lecturing the Christian website for being … non-Christian. (Funny how the media never lecture progressive Christians because they don’t follow the Bible on social issues.)
“Do you have the impression that your work The Bee of Babylon help you experience what you see as the image of Jesus in the Bible? she asked, continuing with, “Jesus certainly calls those who are mighty and strong, as in the Sermon on the Mount, but it is not the same as hitting weak and vulnerable people.”
TO Atlantic, the bee mocking the waking media, the progressive democrats and literally every major left-leaning institution in the country is attacking the “weak and vulnerable”.
