Trayvon Bromell fails 100m final in Olympic clash

Forget about becoming the fastest new man – gold medal favorite Trayvon Bromell couldn’t even reach the 100-meter final in Tokyo.

In a stunning result on Sunday, the American did not qualify after scoring a poor 10.00 in the semifinals. American sprinters Ronnie Baker and Fred Kerley advanced.

Bromell, 26, won the US Olympic trials and posted the fastest time in that event in 2021 with 9.77 seconds.

Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt had won gold in the last three Olympic Games in the 100 meters. Bromell was hoping to write a story of redemption, after leaving the Rio 2016 Olympics in a wheelchair with a burning Achilles tendon pain after running the anchor leg of the 4 × 11 meter relay.

He finished eighth in the 100-meter final in 2016.

Sunday’s result was not what he – or anyone at the Games – had expected.
